Research Emphasis
Lee Alexander is a Research Affiliate Professor Emeritus at the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping – Joint Hydrographic Center at the University of New Hampshire. Previously a Research Scientist with the U.S. Coast Guard, he was also a Visiting Scientist with the Canadian Hydrographic Service. His area of expertise is applied Research, Development, Test and Evaluation (RDT&E) on electronic charting and e-Navigation-related technologies for safety-of-navigation and marine environmental protection. Actively involved in international standards development, he serves on several international committees/working groups including:
- IMO, Safety-of-Navigation Sub-Committee
- IHO, Hydrographic Systems and Services Committee
- IALA, e-Navigation Committee
He also serves as a Technical/Strategic Advisor on e-Navigation for the Canadian Coast Guard. Dr. Alexander has published over 150 papers and reports on shipborne and shore-based navigation systems/technologies, and is a co-author of a textbook on Electronic Charting. He received an M.S. degree from the University of New Hampshire, and a Ph.D. from Yale University. He is also a Captain (now retired) in the U.S. Navy Reserve.
