Nguyen is Deputy Director of the Fishing Ground Forecast Center of the Research Institute for Marine Fisheries in Haiphong.  Since Nguyen returned to Vietnam after his year as a Nippon Foundation / GEBCO scholar he has been involved in the application of seabed data for bottom trawler fishery since 2007, although it has not been easy to convince leaders into thinking about how the seabed, especially in coastal and islands ecosystems, is being destroyed. In addition, he has focused on trying to use satellite data for fish forecasting (tuna fish mainly), focusing on establishing a model for this subject.
