An MOU was signed between The Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project and the Five Deeps Expedition, laying the groundwork for previously unexplored areas of the seafloor to be mapped and the resulting data made available for public use, creating significant opportunities for graduates of CCOM's GEBCO training program.

CCOM is part the East Coast Oceanographic Consortium which was chosen by the NSF to operate a new state-of-the-art research vessel. The ship has been named the R/V Resolution and will be launched in 2021.

The first Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project regional mapping meeting for the Atlantic and Indian Oceans took place this month at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University.

Dr. Larry Mayer was co-chair of the first regional mapping meeting for The Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project. The meeting covered the Arctic, Antarctic and North Pacific regions.

Scientists will explore new sites in deep waters surrounding Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands to learn more about coral and fish habitats as part of a 22-day mission.

The final of the ocean XPRIZE, which will see fleets of robots compete to map the largest area of seafloor inside 24 hours, will take place in deep waters off the coast of Greece. 

Prof. Tom Weber and grad students Liz Weidner and Erin Heffron were aboard New Zealand's R/V Tangaroa in the Calypso Hydrothermal Vent Field in the Bay of Plenty. They worked with an international team whose aim was to use echocounders to quanitify the amount of gases coming up form the ocean floor and find a way to measure the size and rates of the bubbles.
