Ryosuke Nagasawa received an M.Sc. degree in 2016 from the Department of Astronomical Science, the Graduate University for Advanced Studies (Sokendai) in Mitaka, Tokyo. His research theme was related to geodesy of the Earth-Moon system. He was involved in software development for the precise determination of the lunar motion.

After completion of the degree, being away from the celestial bodies, he has been facing the deep underwater terrain. He has been working at the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Department of the Japan Coast Guard (JHOD), and undertook a mission of AUV operations for three years. He has experienced every part of AUV-based hydrographic surveys, including survey design, vehicle control, and data analysis. Through these experiences, he realized that quality assurance and quality control of bathymetric data are essential issues of AUV hydrography.

In 2018, he played a significant role in utilizing optical camera systems newly installed on the AUVs. The analysis of collected seafloor images increased his interest in two more topics of marine sciences: underwater optics, and benthic ecology.
