ESRI GRID Acoustic Backscatter data for 2010 data from Line Islands ridge insular margin, Kingman Reef-Palmyra Atoll ECS survey.
Gridded (100 m/pixel) full coverage, processed Acoustic Backscatter Data of the Line Islands ridge. Raw data were processed for position, orientation, water-column sound speed and refraction effects to provide individual soundings for each beam and are provided as a cleaned gridded Acoustic Backscatter ESRI GRID dataset.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), on behalf of the United States Government, has a requirement to carry out surveys of specific regions on the U.S. continental margins (slope and rise) in order to obtain high-resolution multibeam bathymetry. These data are required to support any potential claim for jurisdiction of an extended continental shelf by the United States under Article 76 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). The requirement is for the collection and processing of full-coverage multibeam sonar data and ancillary data in water depths of approximately 1000 to 5500 m in order to precisely define the location of the 2500-m isobath and the "foot of the slope" as defined under UNCLOS Article 76. As part of their NOAA-funded research program, University of New Hampshire (UNH) researchers oversaw data acquisition, processing and archiving of the data collected during the cruise.

A Kongsberg Maritime EM122 12-kHz Multibeam Echosounder sonar was used with effective beam widths of 1 deg x 2 deg (fore-aft x athwart ships) at -3 dB, with swaths of 2.5 to 3.5 times water depth in water depths between 1500 and 6000 m. Depth accuracies determined by cross lines to be better than 1% of water depth. Descriptions of the systems and offsets applied can be found within the cruise report at http://ccom.unh.edu/publications/Gardner_2010_cruise_report_KM1009.pdf

Horizontal positioning of the vessel was determined using Differential-aided DGPS integrated into an Applanix POS/MV model 320 version 4 system. Positioning is accurate to better than 5 meters (at 95% confidence) during all surveying. All positioning is referenced to the WGS84 Datum.
Within 1% of water depth.
The bathymetry and backscatter data were collected and processed by UNH/CCOM-JHC personnel. Individual ping and beam data were edited for fliers and then merged with navigation and orientation data. Bathymetry and backscatter grids were generated at 100 m/pixel resolution, referenced to WGS-84 ellipsoid in geographic coordinates. The data are output in space-delimited longitude latitude depth format as ESRI GRID files and compressed with WinZip.
